One of the root causes of children dropping out of school and ending up as child laborers is the severe neglect of their vital early years – from birth to the age of six. Save the Children, with its experience across India, sees working towards the provision of Early Childhood Care and Education as one of the best ’preventive strategies’ through the preparedness of children in the age group 3 to 6 years with school readiness skills.
We map out-of-school children and ensure their enrolment into formal schools in age-appropriate classes. We sensitize parents on the importance of school education/pre – school education and children’s right to education so that they send their children to school / AWC. We work with Anganwadi staff and concerned government authorities to strengthen the pre-school education component in AWCs. In classrooms, we encourage and help children to undertake learning activities in subgroups. This makes the entire experience much more fun and promotes healthy competition. During emergencies, we set up Temporary Learning Centres and distribute education kits so that that the affected children do not drift away from the path of education.
